Dear Parents,
Here at the Academy, we are extremely proud of our students’ academic success. We strive to provide a student-centered curriculum that educates the whole child. This year we have 7 students graduating from the 8 th grade. Those students who applied to area prestigious private schools have all been accepted to the school of their choice. We would like to congratulate the following students:
Narek Boghosian who was accepted to Germantown Academy.
Sevag Yepoyan who was accepted to Friend’s Central and the Haverford School.
William Cosgrove who was accepted to Episcopal Academy and Shipley.
We are confident that our students are well prepared to meet the challenges of high school. We wish each of them the best in their educational pursuits.
ASA / VARTANANTZ / CELEBRATION
On Thursday, February 4th at 10:15 a.m., the Academy students will commemorate Vartanantz with a special program depicting a scene from the Battle of Avarayr, along with songs, as they not only honor the memory of Vartan and his soldiers but also the priests who died defending their faith and the Armenian women who gave all of their worldly belongings to help their husbands, brothers and sons in battle. All are welcome to attend. All students should come to school in their uniforms. They will not need their backpacks and there will be NO GYM.
In addition to this program, our students’ grades 4 through 8 have once again been invited by the Armenian Inter-Communal Committee of Philadelphia to participate in a special Vartanantz Day celebration at St. Mark’s Armenian Catholic Church in Wynnewood. This program will begin at 7:00 p.m. Even if your child is not participating in the program, I encourage them to attend. It would be a wonderful way to show support towards their fellow classmates.
ASA / LENTEN MESSAGE
In the Armenian Rite, Lent begins the Monday following Vartanantz celebration. Lent offers us all a very special opportunity to grow in our relationship with God and to deepen our commitment to a way of life, rooted in our baptism. It is a special time to unite ourselves to Jesus through prayer, penance, fasting, sacrificial offerings and works of charity.
Once again, dear parents, during this Lenten Season we ask our students of the Academy to “deprive” themselves of a non-essential food, snack or drink each day and the money that they would spend be set aside for the Sister’s orphanage in Lebanon. Our collection will start on Monday, February 8th and end on March 18th. May Lent be a time for us to re-establish our Christian values and to accept the graces of God offered to us during this Holy season.
ASA / ADMINISTRATION / NEWS
Many of you may have already met Dr. Ron Attarian. However, if you have not and were questioning who he is and what role he plays here I will explain. We have been fortunate this year to have him working with us. Dr. Attarian is a lifelong resident of this area. He lives currently in Erdenheim, PA. He got his BS in Horticulture from Delaware Valley University. He got his MS and PhD from Penn State. He was a teacher of agriculture for twenty years in the School District of Philadelphia. Thereafter, he became an Assistant Principal at a high school and then a Middle School Principal. He retired from public education in 2004 where he was the Principal of the Murray Avenue School in Lower Moreland. After retiring, he did some traveling and he went to Tanzania and climbed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro (the highest point in the African continent). He has been a mentor for beginning school administrators through the Pennsylvania State Department of Education. He has worked in many local schools as an education consultant where he has mentored many beginning teachers. He is an adjunct professor at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown. Dr. Attarian is volunteering his time and expertise and is delighted to be here assisting our faculty and administration.
Prayerfully,
Sr. Emma
